Jazz Fest features recordings dating back to 1974, a benefit for Professor Longhair at the Warehouse. One of the biggest challenges was trying to get the information from the earlier years, from the '70s and '80s when the festival wasn't thinking in those (archival) terms and the business structure really wasn't there to get the recordings made," Lyons says
Jazz Fest 2006 became more than just the annual festival- it became a homecoming and an emotional celebration of the city and the importance of its culture to the world. The 2010 Jazz Fest featured the first-ever Pearl Jam appearance at the Festival with the powerhouse set broadcast live to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The broadcast allowed lead singer, Eddie Vedder, to speak back and forth with a friend of his stationed in Afghanistan live on the video screens alongside the Acura Stage in an unforgettable experience for all who attended.
With 50 tracks recorded live, Jazz Fest captures the festival’s ecstatic spontaneity, which defines the essence and vitality of American popular music. Ever since its inception a half century ago, Jazz Fest has exuberantly expressed the unique confluence in New Orleans of Native American, African, Caribbean, European, Hispanic, and Asian communities. With essays and annotations by Keith Spera, Karen Celestan, Robert Cataliotti, Jeff Place, Rachel Lyons, and Jon Pareles, plus photos spanning the festival’s history, this box set delivers the sights and sounds of being at Jazz Fest for those who.

Another passing loomed over Jazz Fest this weekend as well - that of New Orleans’ great Allen Toussaint, who died unexpectedly Nov. 10 in Madrid. Elvis Costello recorded 2006’s The River in Reverse with Toussaint, and he wore a purple Kangol hat with a Toussaint memorial pin on the front when he played the festival Thursday. He performed a crowd-pleasing set that opened with his traditional closer, (What’s So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding, gesturing occasionally with his guitar toward the Toussaint pin on his hat. When he stopped to play Ascension Day from the album solo on the acoustic guitar, Costello remembered Toussaint’s gentlemanly way of hinting as to what he thought of a part they’d played . Jazz Fest audiences are notorious for their disinterest in new songs, and the lack of a clear chorus made it hard for the audience to connect.
Hmm, it looks like we don’t know much about this album.
